"First City of Kansas"

PBS/KTWU aired a documentary last Thursday night called Wood, Brick & Stone: Leavenworth.  It explored the architecture of the "First City of Kansas" as well as a couple of Fort Leavenworth structures. If you're interested in Kansas or Leavenworth history and/or architecture, it's worth watching.

Leavenworth County Historical Society participates in Blue Star Museums program.

It is said that the more one knows about the place they live in, the more at home they become!  What better place to learn about the history of the Leavenworth area, than the Carroll Mansion Museum, home of the Leavenworth County Historical Society, at 1128 Fifth Avenue!

The Society continues to participate in the Blue Star Museums program, which offers FREE entrance to the museum for all active duty, National Guard and Reserve military personnel and their families from May 21 through August 30, 2014.  By presenting their DD Form 1173 ID Card or DD Form 1173-1 ID Card, up to five family members are eligible for a free tour of the museum.

The members and volunteers invite all to join them in learning more about the exciting history of the Leavenworth area and the beautiful Carroll House, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. They offer many opportunities to become involved:  membership in the Society, camaraderie in working with our energetic crew of volunteers, and  participation in the many and varied activities sponsored by the Society.  For 60 years, this is where the history of Leavenworth has been gathered, preserved, and shared.

For more information about the work of the Society and the museum, visit their website:  http://www.leavenworthhistory.org  or call 913-682-7759.  Open Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10:30 am to 4:30 pm.  Closed Sundays and Mondays and major holidays. Become a part of the community!
