Rose Under Fire

Rose Under Fire, by award winning author Elizabeth Wein, is the companion book to Code name Verity. It continues the World War II story of amateur poet Rose Justice, who is captured by the Nazis and sent to a women’s concentration camp.  Both books contain riveting stories for our teen-age audience.
Rose is a young girl who does not seem to stand a single chance against the Nazis interrogators.  Though trapped she is inspired by other women in the camp; a female fighter pilot, a young Polish girl and a once famous French novelist. Through loyalty, bravery and strong resolution, Rose is determined to survive.
Elizabeth Wein was born in New York, but currently lives with her family in Scotland.  She is a pilot of small planes and holds a PhD from the University of Pa.
These are the kinds of books that once you start you cannot put down. Both are available at CARL. Come see us soon!

The Day the Crayons Quit

What is one to do when one wants to color and all the crayons say, “We quit!”    Author Drew Daywalt and illustrator Oliver Jeffers come up with the solution in their book, The Day the Crayons Quit .
All the crayons have some pretty good reasons for their attitude.  Blue feels overused with all that water, orange and yellow are not speaking to each other because they both think they should be used to color the sun, and beige is tired of playing second fiddle to brown.  The list goes on.
Although this appears to be a children’s book, it has clear applications for those in the workplace.  There are ways we can all learn to play nicely.
Originally from Belfast, Ireland, Oliver Jeffers now makes his home in Brooklyn.  He is earning a great deal of acclaim for his illustrations.
If you wish to spend a few well spent minutes, come to the library and read This Moose Belongs to Me, Stuck, Up and Down, The Way Back Home, and that pesky crayon book, all illustrated by Jeffers.  You won’t be sorry!
