Review of The Animal Book by Steve Jenkins

The word “amazing” is highly over used.  However, if you peruse a new book in the children’s collection called The Animal Book: A Collection of the Fastest, Fiercest, Toughest, Cleverest, Shyest---and Most Surprising Animals on Earth by Steve Jenkins, you will find that its appropriate use is for this kind of experience. The work is a stunning masterpiece.  You will be hooked when you read the very first page.
When Steve Jenkins was 6 years old, he was given a copy of Life magazine.  He proceeded to cut out illustrations of giant tortoises and blue-footed boobies.  He made his own journal with the pictures, glue and graph paper.  He has not looked back since.
Every picture of each animal is unique, playful and irresistible in this volume. The back of the book is devoted to how Steve creates a book and what paper he uses to make his pictures (e.g. The blue whale is make with a blue ink, a plank of wood, recycled newspaper and paper from Japan.)
One can open this book to any page and be captivated.  Steve does all of the art work and checks and re-checks his facts for accuracy.  His wife, Robin Page, is a frequent collaborator with him.
CARL has 19 of Steve’s books including a favorite of many, Actual Size.  (The cover of the book features a gorilla’s hand---substantially larger than a child’s hand or an adult hand.)
Please come to the library soon to borrow this book as well as some of Steve’s other books.  You will be delighted!

Knock Knock: My Dad’s Dream for Me by Daniel Beaty and Bryan Collier

Every morning, I play a game with my father.  He goes KNOCK KNOCK on my door, and I pretend to be asleep till he gets right next to the bed. And, my papa, he tells me, “I love you.”
So begins Knock Knock: My Dad’s Dream for Me by Daniel Beaty and Bryan Collier, illustrator.   Winner of the Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award for 2014, the book is the story of a young boy who wakes up one morning to find his father gone.  The boy feels loss because of the separation from his father.
This is a most unfortunate circumstance that happens often in American society. Although this separation is due to the father’s incarceration, there are many men who are separated from their children due to divorce or for reasons of making a livelihood for the family.
This book is particularly appropriate for military fathers who because of their service requirements are often away from their children.
Loss is felt due to the separation of the father figure.  The book can give a father some ideas of what he can do to minimize this separation anxiety.  Other books illustrated by Bryan Collier are: Dave the potter: artist, poet, slave; Lift every voice and sing; Lincoln and Douglass: an American friendship, and Martin’s big words: the life of Martin Luther King, Jr.  There are additional titles as well at CARL.
Come soon and see them all.
